How local paper reported the story by ken liebeskind

The shooting of 6-year-old Kayla Rolland by a 6-year-old boy in Mount Morris Township, a suburb of Flint, Mich., occurred at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb 29. The Flint Journal had the story in two editions the same afternoon.

"We heard about it right away from the police scanner in the newsroom, and we got people there immediately," said John Foren, metro editor of the Journal.

Its coverage was so rapid that national papers, including The New York Times, picked up portions of it for their Wednesday issues.

The Journal had the story for its Tuesday suburban and metro Flint editions, which came out at 3:00 p.m. "We had the full story with photos of a child being consoled and a parent walking out of the [Buell Elementary School]," Foren said.

The police reporter was the first on the scene, but another was sent as soon as the severity of the situation was determined and children were being evacuated from the school to a church nearby. …
