Matt Haig has created a character who will appeal on many levels. Evie, his heroine, lives with her father, and is often visited by her grandmother Flora, accompanied by a small bearded dragon. Evie's mother died when Evie was a baby and she still misses her.

Evie and her grandmother share a wonderful Talent, they can hear the thoughts of animals and can speak to animals without opening their mouths. Evie's father fears that this gift will lead Evie into trouble and certainly her grandmother had been imprisoned for using her Talent when she was young.

Evie tries hard not to listen to the animals, to hear of their unhappiness but sometimes she finds it impossible. Her kindness and concern for many creatures, including a caged rabbit, a tiny sparrow, a scruffy stray, a marmalade cat and a Maltese terrier are all remembered by the animals but she keeps it all to herself. …
