The novel tells the story of Alfie, who can't come to terms with the loss of his mum, who died of cancer. Alfie and his mum were very close and he finds it challenging to be around his father, who doesn't know how to share his grief and feelings in general, let alone how to comfort his son. Alfie is so consumed with his sadness that he won't even consider giving himself a break by filling his days with what used to be his passion--football. Then Alfie meets new girl Alice, who's dealing with family drama of her own; on the one hand, Alice is someone Alfie can talk to, but on the other one, she makes him do things that the old Alfie--a good, obedient student--would have never done before. Ultimately, the two teenagers realise that they don't have to remain alone in their despair, and they manage to overcome their dark emotions and embrace the positive elements of their lives. …
