This book is about the author's great uncle, Allen Green, who served and died on the Western Front in 1918. The author, Ted Green, is a Somerset farmer, whose family has farmed the land at Banks Farm, Chesterblade for six generations. It is based on a bag of letters and other possessions rediscovered in 2011 and followed up by research in local and national archives. The author them made a journey following Allen's training in England, his journey to France, ending at the Mormal Forest, where he was fatally wounded, the casualty clearing station at Caudry, where he died on the 5th November and the cemetery nearby where he is buried. The news of his death reached his parents on Armistice Day.

Allen was one of a large but overlooked group, the conscripts who were called up from 1916 onwards as the numbers of volunteers proved to be inadequate. …
