Author Derek Polischuk's intention for writing Transformational Piano Teaching: Mentoring Students from All Walks of Life is to examine the role of a mentor, the concept of family support in musical endeavors and a teacher's motivation to keep teaching fresh and exciting. He encourages mentorship and diversity in the piano studio and provides a broad overview of various learners a teacher might encounter. Students selected for this book include gifted students; adult, recreational, undergraduate, graduate and international students; and students with depression, high-functioning autism and attention deficit disorder.

For the various learners, Polischuk explores selected information on inherent characteristics; learning theories, scientific research and various statistics related to the diversities; causes, symptoms and treatment of learning disabilities; and challenges and benefits of musical study. His information is gleaned from professional journals of medical, psychiatric and musical associations, from articles and books written by renowned piano pedagogues and researchers, and from personal experience. Effective teaching and mentoring strategies and techniques are suggested for the various types of learners.
