One could give to beer the elevated status of a universal human truth.Think quintessentially Irish Guinness or Japanese Sapporo, each culture has a beer all its own.

But in recent years, smaller, more local craft breweries have been on the rise, necessitating globe-trotting to gain a taste of the regional takes on the classics. From well-established breweries in South Africa and California, to the burgeoning markets in Southeast Asia, craft beer is worth traveling for.

Located in the heart of California wine country, this brewery is a destination all its own. Every year in February, Russian River releases Pliny the Younger for two weeks. The Triple India Pale Ale is so popular that people camp out on the streets to enjoy a glass.

These beers pay homage to the history and playfulness of "America's Playground." Beer lovers can try their year-round classics like Mermaid Pilsner or their summer favorite, Cotton Candy Kolsch--all steps from the boardwalk and the famous Cyclone roller coaster built in 1927.

A Californian and Chilean husband-and-wife team established this brewery 30 minutes outside Santiago in 2006. Their brewery serves freshly-made Italian pizza and has 14 draught lines, with beers inspired by wine, California style beer and even milkshakes.

The British have long had a loving relationship with beer, but Beavertown is putting a new spin on the classics. From the quirky cartoon labels to the industrial London locale, this brewery will appeal to the adventurous and fun at heart. …
