CLEAN LATE-'50s Strats are among the most drool-inducing of all guitars, but even within that group, serial number 22513 is special. Explains Mark Pollock of Charley's Guitar Shop, Dallas: "It's got three extras going for it: the semi-see-through blonde finish, plus gold hardware, which is rare, and the white/gold combination itself." This color combo is occasionally nicknamed the "Mary Kaye," after an entertainer pictured in Fender catalogs.

There's some neck wear in an unusual place, near the top of the fretboard, and a slight ding on the body's lower left edge, "that's not uncommon," says John Peden, who photographed this month's Encore. "On those old tweed cases, the latch spring sometimes gave way, and the latch could scratch the guitar." One more oddity: The pickguard warped, so one owner added two extra screws to flatten it out. A later owner had the holes filled by a dentist, using dental paste that doesn't quite match. …
