The Bet: which national newspaper will Piers Morgan be editing on 1 October 2000?

The gossip in the Press Gallery this week is not about whether Ken Livingstone will break his word and stand for London mayor but if the editor of the Mirror, Piers Morgan, will keep his job. An internal Mirror inquiry has cleared him of any wrongdoing but that has not stopped the media putting the boot in. The attack has been led by those parts owned by Rupert Murdoch and friends who have a clear self-interest in damaging the reviving Mirror. The Sun has led the way, with the vitriol levelled against Morgan almost on a par with that usually reserved for a paedophile. This week, the Times wrote that bookmakers had added to Morgan's discomfort and quoted Victor chandler as offering odds of 6-4 on his survival. In fact, Morgan is 6-4 favourite still to be at the Mirror in October. I spoke to Victor chandler who told me that the Times story was a "misinterpretation" of the odds and that they would not give odds on him being sacked. …
