The Bet: Who will become the mayor of London?

When Frank Dobson announced his intention to run for mayor, he was immediately installed as favourite with the bookies. Nothing that has happened since then has changed my opinion that Dobbo will win, but the bookies seem to think differently. They probably believe the hype surrounding Ken Livingstone. I don't. The chattering classes and the Tories may want Ken to run London, but believe that enough Labour Party members will reject his ambitions. I recently spoke to a couple of ward meetings in Peckham, and was surprised at the paltry support for Livingstone. Islington Labour may support him, but working-class Peckham does not.

So far, the only reliable analysis has been in the Guardian. It said that the voting in the union section and the MP section is more or less certain, and that, in order to win, Dobbo will need just over 30 per cent of the party vote. …
