Like almost any other area of business these days, our sector faces the challenge of how best to embrace the opportunities provided by the internet and how to align our offline and online products. With our ThomWeb.co.uk site, we have made a great start, but it's a fast-moving world out there.

What did you learn as marketing manager at Mills & Boon and how has that translated to your role at Thomson Directories?

It was my first job and a very romantic period, working with all those heroes and heroines! Actually, my five years there gave me a superb grounding in marketing. We modelled our approach on FMCG marketing principles and, using all elements of the mix, engaged quite sophisticated product segmentation. Many of the techniques and ways of thinking about problems and opportunities in that period have helped me both at Thomson Directories and earlier at Bayer Consumer Products, where I spent five years in the late-80s.

What do you most/least enjoy about the environment you work in?

I enjoy the energy and the pace of the organisation I'm in. Life is never dull. I dislike forever playing catch up with the combination of e-mail, voicemail, letters, faxes, mobile phone messages and the rest of the in-tray. But then I did say I enjoyed the pace.

What individual has influenced you most in your career?

I can think of about ten individuals that I'd say have significantly influenced my career in one way or another-too many to mention here. …
