Article excerpt

I am a retired banker and a volunteer instructor at the local high school. I instruct students in personal finance and investing in the stock market. In recent months, I have become accustomed to relying on the great articles that have appeared in BLACK ENTERPRISE for discussions and guidance. But I must tell you the January 2000 issue is absolutely invaluable.

My students have been learning the practical aspects of investing by jointly researching and selecting stocks to invest in and making actual purchases within the $5,000 account that was made available to them at the beginning of the school year. Whatever profit accrues from their investment at the end of the year will be given to them to start their own investment club.

This week we discussed the Black Wealth Initiative and the Declaration of Financial Independence that appeared in this month's edition of BE. Copies were given out for them to take home to their parents. From the enthusiasm showed by the students, I feel certain that these two documents will change many lives for the better down the road.

Many thanks for a great magazine and keep up the good work in providing your readers with the tools for a brighter future.
