I had never worked in an office before starting at TDA. In school and university holidays I had always done part-time waitressing or bar work, so the environment at TDA felt alien.

When a colleague asked me to send a fax on my first day, I had to ask for instructions-but through out the past six months everyone has been helpful and welcoming.

As I only had two lectures on direct marketing, there were huge gaps in my knowledge of the theory. Industry jargon and DM terminology seemed like double-Dutch to me at first, but now terms such as forecasting, customer acquisition and print production are second nature.

From the beginning I have been doing a 'proper' job. I am a junior account executive working as an integral part of the account team, dealing with clients including Cats Protection, AA Financial Services and Bank of Scotland.

One of the account directors has been my mentor and it is useful being able to go to him to talk through any work-related problems. …
