Department of Education Grants

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) is accepting grant proposals for its 21st Century Community Learning Centers, a broad-based program that helps rural and inner-city public schools and districts plan or expand projects that benefit the educational, health, social services, cultural and recreational needs of the community. The program is aimed at communities that lack resources to establish afterschool centers or programming for at-risk students.

A panel of DOE officials will review proposals based on need, quality of project design, adequacy of resources, quality of management plan and quality of project evaluation. The deadline for proposals is March 20. For more information, call 800-USA-LEARN or e-mail 21stCCLC@ed.gov.

Incorporating the Internet

In an effort to promote effective Internet research skills and media literacy in the classroom, N2H2, a Seattle-based Internet filtering company, is conducting a contest with the Computer Learning Foundation, "Building Effective Roadmaps for the Information Superhighway.'
