FOR MORE THAN 100 years, APHA Press has published and updated the "Control of Communicable Diseases Manual," a lauded reference guide for health professionals.

Two companion volumes to CCDM have recently been published by APHA Press. The first, released one year ago, covered laboratory practices of disease control and prevention. In spring, a disease manual for clinicians is set to be published to complete the trilogy.

"Control of Communicable Diseases: Clinical Practice" is edited by two experts in the field: Omar Khan, MD, MHS, and David Heymann, MD, DTM&H. Heymann was co-editor of the laboratory practice volume and editor of the 20th edition of the diseases manual, published in 2014.

Unlike CCDM, this clinical companion volume covers diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases, while also providing an overview of epidemiology and prevention. The book, to be available in print and as an e-book, is intended for health professionals working in global health, infectious disease, epidemiology, travel medicine and tropical medicine.

The handbook's editorial advisory board sought experts who are globally renowned in their fields, Elizabeth Healy, MPH, the book's managing editor, told The Nation's Health. The book covers 135 infectious diseases from A to Z --actinomycosis to zika--with treatment recommendations.

One chapter is on Lyme disease, which accounts for 80% of tick-borne illnesses in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 2004 and 2016, Lyme cases nearly doubled, in part due to climate change. As many as 300,000 people in the U.S. could be infected each year, CDC said.

The book's Lyme disease chapter, by Grace Marx, MD, MPH, offers background and discussion of symptoms, risk groups, causes, diagnosis and treatment. …
