Cuomo's Latest Crusade: Tidying Up the Internet

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo, rumored to be giving thought to the next gubernatorial race in New York state, has mounted his charger to do battle with dragons on the Internet -- grand dragons, that is. Cuomo is organizing and funding a national task force of religious, civil-rights and community groups, plus business and Internet interests, to ferret out "hate pages" such as those posted by the Ku Klux Klan, or KKK. In a HUD statement on the project it was noted that the effort will take into account the preservation of "free-speech rights."

Cuomo is becoming known for using his federal housing agency as a platform for forays into broad societal conflicts. In this latest move, as in the past, he ventures in where critics are unlikely to follow. It may seem reasonable to ask where he gets off tackling the broader problems of the world when he's supposed to focus on housing, but it would be the brave politician who would take him to task. …
