The Association for Library Service to Children continues to work with various partners to improve and ensure the future of the nation through exemplary library service to children, their families, and others who work with children.

ALSC partnered with WGBH, Boston's public television station, to focus the Arthur television series' outreach efforts on libraries during the fall 1999 season. Public libraries received an Arthur's Library Adventure kit and 10 libraries received mini-grants to implement outreach plans in their communities.

Between the Lions

ALSC and WGBH expanded their partnership for Between the Lions, a multimedia reading initiative geared to ages 4 to 7, which begins airing on PBS stations April 3 (AL, Mar., p. 9). ALA and AASL are also founding partners. Public and selected elementary school libraries will receive materials with programming ideas and resources. In addition, 20 public libraries will be selected for a local outreach campaign to begin in fall 2000, with the help of PPO and PIO.

ALSC is also reaching out to parents of middle-school students with ParenTech, a unique technology campaign to provide parents with resources to prepare their children for life in a technologically complex society. The program now reaches libraries in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Once again, ALSC is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Education, Pizza Hut, Reading Is Fundamental, and Scholastic to produce materials for Read*Write*Now. Thanks to Marc Brown, the creator of the Arthur character, this year's poster will feature Arthur and his family reading. The posters will be available free in late spring; call 800-USA-LEARN. Born to Read continues to expand with more than 500 libraries using the program. Parents magazine has recently agreed to print 500,000 copies of the pamphlet Born to Read: How to Raise a Reader and distribute them at no cost to every library in the country. ALSC will receive a portion of any subscription obtained through this campaign. Last summer over 40 libraries received books donated by the Harper Growing Tree series of HarperCollins. Booksource donated the shipping.

Happy birthday, Spot

ALSC is working with ALA Graphics to develop new bookmarks and posters for the birthday of Eric Hill's popular storybook dog, Spot. Other new products include Newbery, Caldecott, and Belpre bookmarks and posters featuring the award and honor books and their authors or illustrators.

ALSC continues to provide service to members through its publishing program; programs at Annual Conference, such as this year's pre-conference, "Through the Artist's Eye: Understanding the Art of the Picture Book," with underwriting from Abrams Books, and the President's Program on programming for school-age children; continuing education endeavors, such as the third Up the Leadership Ladder National Institute, in collaboration with ALTA and RUSA, to be held October 12-14 in Baltimore; and product development. …
