Blockbuster Courts Tie with Sony PlayStation2

Home-video chain Blockbuster Entertainment is talking to Sony about linking its digital video disc (DVD) rental and sales business to the launch of Sony's new PlayStation2 console.

Blockbuster is pushing for a jointly funded ad campaign to coincide with the launch of PS2 at the end of this year.

Siobhan Chatburn, Blockbuster's UK marketing director, said: "DVD is still very much a parents' toy but once PlayStation 2 comes on board, with its ability to play DVDs, it will become a mass-market technology. We will be doing something with PlayStation."

DVD is expected to replace video as the most common form of home movie player.

PlayStation2 will allow people to play DVDs on their home TV screens through the games console. They will not need a separate DVD player.

Blockbuster hopes that by linking with PlayStation2, which is expected to be the biggest selling DVD player, it will maintain its dominance of the home-movie rental market. Blockbuster is four times bigger than its closest rival. …
