Two French Companies Develop 8.5-GB Capacity DVD Discs

The French Technology Press Office (FTPO) has announced that the French electronics company MPO Media/Hi-SPACE, in partnership with CEA/LETI, France's Laboratory for Electronics, Technology, and Instrumentation, have announced the development of a new generation of dual-layer rewritable DVD discs with a capacity of 8.5 GB. According to the release, a new generation of recordable discs, with capacities equal to those of prerecorded discs, will make it possible to replace the traditional VHS videocassette. This capacity was obtained with the optical components that are used in the current generation of DVDs, opening the way to full compatibility with existing DVD-Video and DVD-ROM drives.

By developing the first dual-layer recordable DVD with phase-change technology, MPO Media/Hi-SPACE and CEA/LETI are responding to the needs of many professionals and eventually to the requirements of the general public.

With a capacity of 8.5 GB on only one side, rewritable DVD offers a playing time of more than 3 hours as well as direct digital writing and rewriting, a very-high-definition image (high-speed MPEG-2), high-fidelity sound (Dolby AC-3), and the absence of wear. …
