ITV Rapped over Fall in News Viewing

The Independent Television Commission this week delivered a massive blow to ITV and said it had failed to satisfy two of the crucial conditions it laid down when it allowed it to axe News at Ten.

Sir Robin Biggam, the ITC's chairman, said: "The ITC is of the view that in the two key public service commitments of the audiences for national/international news and regional programmes, the new ITV schedule has failed."

The ITC has now ordered ITV chiefs to produce proposals in time for the next commission meeting on May 18.

Delivering its review on ITV's weekday evenings, the ITC said the decline in news audiences was unacceptable.

The total audiences for ITV's news at 6.30pm and its nightly news at 11pm have fallen by 13.9%, according to ITC figures, while aggregate audiences for main regional news programmes have fallen by 22%. although this figure reduced to 16.4% following changes to the schedule at the beginning of the year.

The ITC's damning verdict that the new ITV schedule has "failed to deliver" in two key public service commitments will lend weight to calls for the reinstatement of News at Ten led by Gerald Kaufman MP. …
