Since its launch in 1997, the Headbone Zone has built itself quite a following as a site for "tween" adventurers. As with its earlier CD-ROM products, which introduced kids to such zany characters as Elroy and the Gigglebone Gang, Headbone's Web offerings do a good job of balancing education and just plain fun.

The most school-oriented of the activities at the site make up the Headbone Derby series. In each of these research adventures, students take part in a text-based simulation (escaping from slavery, returning scientific inventors to their right time in history, and so on) through which they progress by answering multiple-choice questions about relevant content. The site makes use of the Ask Jeeves search engine to help students narrow in on the correct answers.

Although the derbies lack the multimedia glitz and some of the humor found in Headbone's CD-ROM titles (and its newly created television shows), they provide a fun and interesting context in which to practice search skills and tie real-life Internet resources into the curriculum. …
