Display classified ads rose 9% in March newspaper linage, compared with the same period a year earlier, according to exclusive E&P/ Competitive Media Reporting monthly ad indices. By contrast, national ROP ads declined 4%, retail ads declined 2%, and insert ads were unchanged. Despite Internet job boards seeking to win over recruitment ads, the biggest classified jump was in the recruitment category, up 19%.

National ROP Index YTD 0% MAR -4%

National ROP ad linage in the Government/Political and Investments categories showed strong volume gains in March compared to the same month last year. However, the Airlines, Auto Dealer Associations, and Computers & Software categories continued to slow down significantly and volume was much lower than in March 1999. Overall, the National ROP Index declined considerably in March compared with the same month last year.

Retail ROP Index YTD -3% MAR -2%

The Computer Stores category in March once again doubled in ad linage, remaining the only strong category in the Retail ROP Index. …
