Richard Tompkins, of The Green Shield Trading Stamp Company, opened the first 17 Argos stores in 1973. Great Universal Stores bought the company in April 1998 for [pounds]1.9bn. The company consists of Argos Distributors, Europe's leading catalogue chain store; Argos Business Solutions, the incentives and promotions business; and Argos Direct, the home delivery operation.

Argos has over 450 stores in the UK, including 70 Superstores. The company issues about 36 million catalogues, which it publishes twice a year, in January and August. This is supported by two bursts of advertising, as well as seasonal ads in the run-up to Christmas.

The Argos brand underwent a makeover last year to modernise its image. Stores, catalogues and the brand logo were revamped.

Ogilvy (then Ogilvy & Mather) created an advertising campaign to support the new look, which carried the line, 'brighter shopping'.

To reaffirm its position as a modern retailer, Argos launched its home shopping service -- Argos Direct-last August. It has also signed up as a content provider on interactive TV services, Open and Telewest's Active Digital. …
