So many times I read about how important training is and the perils that will befall anyone who doesn't get it right.

Why do I read this so often? The simple answer is that we all recognise that recruitment and staff retention is a thorny issue.

It is equally clear, however, that many companies aren't getting it right.

In my opinion, for training to work, there must be a consensus that it goes to the centre of the company.

The issue of training cannot be paid lip service and instead must be something that everyone believes in. The benefits of getting it right are numerous, including a better ability to retain and motivate staff.

It also gives people clearer personal goals, allowing them to progress up a career ladder in-house.

But the most important aspect of staff training, and one which I feel is unfortunately overlooked by many, is the focus on developing employees' skills to better service our clients' needs.
