If so, may be a secondment is the answer. It's a great solution for clients to short-term staffing issues and, for both the individual and agency in question, can help build effective and lasting relationships.

Having recently returned from secondment to Nissan for five months, I can talk about the pros and cons of such a venture with some authority.

Nissan had been my client at Tullo Marshall Warren (TMW) for three years, so welcomed the chance to get an inside view of the organisation and its marketing teams. And so donned a new hat--fleet planning and communications manager--and became a client. The brief was broad, covering all elements of the marketing mix.

The experience proved extremely positive. I got to know my clients in a way that would be impossible in any normal client/agency relationship. What's more, as well as influencing the work carried out in the final quarter of 1999, I had the opportunity to establish the strategy for 2000.

Equally important, the secondment was a win:win situation for both Nissan and TMW. …
