I am amazed at how personnel (and particularly senior personnel) often find it difficult to take time out to go on training courses. There always seems to be something more important that they have to do.

Now don't get me wrong I am fully aware of the demands placed on senior people but why are some too busy to carve out time for training?

In my experience people get promoted into positions and start managing staff or undertaking new tasks without having any formal training to help them cope with their new responsibilities.

Often there may be the odd course to help steer or direct us, but generally not a continual programme of development that is matched to an individual's needs and in line with their overall performance appraisal.

If all goes well, responsibilities grow and we continue our upward trajectory. Then I thing we seem to get to a point where we believe we are beyond training. It's almost as if the fact that we have been successful is a guarantor that we can continue to progress. …
