Kashif Siddiqui couldn't believe what he saw on the front page of The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., during an otherwise ordinary day in 1999. As he stopped off at the store on his way to high school in the suburban town of Livingston, the Page One photo grabbed his attention.

There, big as life, was a shot of Siddiqui -- a junior at the time -- letting out a mighty yawn during a lecture in his precalculus class. Accompanying the photo was a story about sleep depriva-tion among high- school students.

"All I could see was that picture in stacks and stacks of papers," Siddiqui, who recently graduated, recalled with a laugh. "The photographer had followed me around all day, and that was the photo they used. It looked like I was falling asleep in class."

That front-page surprise was one of many experiences shared by a group of 14 students whose lives during the last five years were closely chronicled by The Star-Ledger in one of the paper's most ambitious projects. Beginning in 1995, the Advance Publications-owned daily set out to follow the group through the ups and downs and triumphs and tragedies of high school.

Trailing seven students from Livingston -- and seven others from the more-urbanized Newark -- Star-Ledger reporters and a photographer spent the next five years covering nearly every aspect of the students' lives. "We started out with an idea, and we didn't know where it would take us," said Jim Willse, Star-Ledger editor. "In five years, each student became a story unto themselves."

Between 1995 and 2000, the paper ran about 60 stories from staff writers Nick Chiles and Ana Alaya on everything from jitters over tests to rooting for a local hockey team. Photographer Scott Lituchy, meanwhile, shot some 100 photographs depicting events as wide-ranging as band practice and family funerals. …
