PLATT: PROTESS TOO MUCH?

So how much does the pilot of the upcoming NBC newspaper drama "Deadline" -- a show about a tabloid reporter who uses journalism grad students in his investigations -- resemble the true-life adventures of Northwestern University Professor David Protess? Let him count the ways.

"It's the Anthony Porter case," Protess says flatly about the series' pilot episode. "You have two African-American men who are on Death Row with the clock ticking and our hero involves students in a graduate journalism class -- exactly as we did. The students recreate the crime scene -- exactly as we did. They become convinced that the state has convicted the wrong man -- exactly as we did. Our hero develops evidence implicating other men in the crime -- exactly as we did," says Protess, who obtained a script for the pilot from NBC, but has not seen a completed episode. The weekly series makes its debut Oct. 2.

And in another apparent case of art imitating life, Protess says the script of the pilot (previewed in E&P two weeks ago) has the freed men hug the journalist outside the doors of a prison. …
