When the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle distributed its awards, the musical Reefer Madness picked up seven of them, with honors going to director Andy Flickman, composers Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney and performer Christian Campbell, among others. Circle X Theatre's production of Louis Slotkin Sonata, by Paul Mullin, won the Ted Schmitt Award for outstanding world premiere.

Regina Taylor's new play Oo-Bla-Dee received the 2000 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award, presented at a ceremony during the 24th annual Humana Festival of New American Plays. Oo-Bla-Dee focuses on black female bebop musicians during World War II.

George Keathley, artistic director of Missouri Repertory Theatre, received the Margo Jones Medal in April. The medal commemorates one of the pioneers of the American professional regional theatre movement. The award was presented at the Inge Festival in Independence, Kan.

The Denver Center Theatre Company and the Francesca Ronnie Primus Foundation awarded the 2000 Francesca Primus Prize to Brooke Berman for her work Playing House. A New York--based writer and performer, Berman won the Primus Prize in 1998 for Wonderland, her satire of high-paced life in New York and Hollywood. …
