Paul Stead started his career as a designer at Fitch and rose to become associate director. In 1988 he started his own design consultancy, PSD. His clients now include Van den Bergh Foods, Philips and Mitsubishi.

A great many questions came to my mind as I began to assess this writing sample...such as why some of those shapes appeared and when? This is very unusual writing with an unusual perpetrator(to put it mildly).

Stylised, original and zany, his writing is a bit different too! This is a creative builder of some sort, he has a great sense of time and place.

He is ambitious, sharp-witted (and sharp-tongued), uncompromising and demanding. He doesn't seek originality -- he is original. He interacts with people in a particularly interesting way.

He is able to get so close he seems able to discover what people are thinking by practically peering into their eyes and yet he retains independence of action and decision making to such an extent that he seems to have a glass wall between him and the outside world. …
