Will Mary Cheney's sexuality be a problem for George W. Bush's campaign?

By all accounts Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney is very conservative. During his six terms in Congress he rated nearly perfect scores from conservative groups, voting against the Hate Crimes Statistics Act of 1988 and against a bill to provide funding for HIV testing and counseling. As secretary of Defense during the Bush administration, Cheney backed the ban on gays in the military even after his own spokesman, Pete Williams, was outed as a gay man by angry activists. But Cheney's principles may find themselves put to the test on the campaign trail as he tries to reconcile his history with a new revelation: His daughter Mary is a lesbian.

Cheney, who was chosen by GOP presidential candidate George W. Bush to be his running mate on July 25, had nothing to say about his daughter in the days leading up to the Republican convention, and Mary Cheney was avoiding the press. But at Coors Brewing Co., where she worked until May, Mary Cheney was in charge of the company's outreach to gays and lesbians. In an interview last year with Girlfriends magazine she said she came to work at Coors "because I knew several other lesbians who were very happy here. …
