Chuck Woodbury doesn't have assignments. He has adventures. There's the times he wrote about the radio station that's operated from a bedroom, an espresso cafe in a cow pasture, and Dishwasher Pete, whose goal is to wash dishes in every state.

For the past 13 years, Woodbury, 53, has been crisscrossing the American West in a 24-foot recreational vehicle and writing for his own newspaper about people, places, and events far off the beaten path.

Woodbury finds stories in such places as Quartzsite, Ariz.; Vernal, Utah; and George, Wash. He is already on his second RV and over the years has logged 200,000-plus miles.

Woodbury is the publisher, editor, photographer, and reporter for Out West, a quarterly tabloid newspaper that chronicles Western living and culture in small towns that dot the vast expanse of the West. Sold via subscriptions, the paper usually runs between 20 and 28 pages. Woodbury also has an entertaining Web site (http://www.outwestnewspaper .com), and has written a hardback book entitled "The Best of Out West."

The newspaper was started in 1987 as a hobby after Woodbury sold a community newspaper near Sacramento, Calif. …
