Three months before I resigned as Gordon Brown's press secretary, the Chancellor and I had along and painful discussion about my future role. We decided that Gordon would be better off with a new press person by his side. My exit simply came a bit sooner than we had expected. I wonder if Tony Blair and Alastair Campbell are having the same discussion that we once had?

Most political hacks think that Campbell has lost the plot, and it's difficult to disagree. His decision to attack virtually every national newspaper for their coverage of Europe has only made them even more hostile towards the man he is supposed to protect. The real problem for Labour is, as always, Peter Mandelson, who doesn't support the government's line on Europe. …
