Northern & Shell is planning to launch a dedicated TV broadcast channel based around its celebrity gossip magazine OK!, with initial roll-out planned for spring next year.

The publisher is understood to currently be in negotiations about leasing the space needed to launch the channel on digital satellite, and is believed to be developing its own in-house TV operation.

It could also potentially make use of its studio facilities from its existing television operation, the Fantasy Channel, which it launched in June 1995.

News of the plan comes just a week after ITV pulled the plug on its OKTV! series.

A second series was due to air later this year and was expected to be co-produced by the broadcaster and Northern & Shell.

Negotiations fell through after the parties failed to agree terms on broadcast rights, with Northern & Shell rejecting terms that would have stopped it making material available to other broadcasters for three years. …
