Though grateful of the income learn from appearing in TV ads-I am the man from the deeply annoying 'Captain of your Ship' ad for Mullerice -- it is essential to find work for the remaining 51 weeks of the year.

Perusing the job ads in the back of The Stage, it would seem there are two areas where employers feel actors' skills are most suited: topless dancing in Bahrain or sales. As a male actor with no knowledge of tassel-twirling, this rather limits me.

The benefits that actors bring to sales are well known. After a two-month tour of Rookery Nook around the village halls of the Outer Hebrides it is relatively simple to sound enthusiastic about a new magazine on the joys of virtual fly-fishing. But isn't it time for employers to look beyond the obvious?

What is frequently overlooked is that the majority of actors in this country are educated to degree standard, and this, combined with their inherent performance and communication skills, can be used in a myriad of situations from head-hunting to customer service, from direct, telephone and guerrilla marketing to data-building and research. …
