Dear Readers,

Character apparently does count for Democrats who, at the Los Angeles conclave for Al Gore, paraded their praise for virtue day and night like some voodoo chant to make us forget the last eight years.

What brings this to mind is, in fact, the vice president's "acceptance" speech in which he sought to show America who he is as a person -- as opposed to who he has been as Bill Clinton's No. 2 and his "daddy's" groom for so many years.

Consider Gore's values concerning the economy, the environment, education, integrity and a litany of other positions he's trying to stake out apart from Clinton. Let's see, he talked about trickle-down economics where the rich folks have done well during the last eight years but there are too many little people who haven't yet caught the gravy train. He must have been talking about tenants on his estate in Tennessee, poor as dirt, for whom he was the slumlord.

He talked about education, too. …
