Technology is not the solution, it is a tool. And when used to its fullest potential, it can produce amazing results. Educators have known this for some time now and it is becoming more apparent everyday. Routinely, new thin-client devices are showing up on the market as the portal model has gained momentum. Over the past year, the SchoolTone model has emerged from the quagmire of technological developments to find itself standing on solid ground. This model, first designed as a clear-cut portal delivery system of curriculum material through a Web browser, has emerged from a concept to a reality. When put in the hands of educators and students, transformations have taken place.

For example, Enrico Crocetti, administrator for management information services at the Deer Park Union Free School District (N.Y.), reports a migration in the number of traditional PC units being distributed in his district (see Deer Park District Levels its Playing Field on page 4). In the past, the district has installed numerous high-maintenance desktop units, only to soon realize the amount of time and financial expenditures to provide adequate upkeep on the machines. Now, by incorporating Sun Microsystem's thin-client devices into classrooms, administrators can take full advantage of what technology has to offer.
