Who's Minding the Store?

How safe is your company from fraud, theft, misconduct, and dishonesty? Not as safe as you might think. According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), employees must decide to be ethical and honest. A new white paper, "Ethics: A Human Resource Perspective," cites studies by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the Ethics Resource Center (ERC) in concluding that HR departments should examine their ethics policies to create "a trusting and productive workplace."

Unethical behavior isn't isolated, and the employees you might expect to go astray aren't the ones who do. In 1998 a SHRM survey found that 27% of employees had observed someone stealing or participating in theft, 36% lying or falsifying reports, and 45% lying to superiors. The ACFE's Report to the Nation on Occupational Fraud and Abuse found losses increased with responsibility. The average losses from managerial abuse were four times the losses from nonmanagerial abuse. …
