Getting your hands on art . . . two days in Sunnyvale

A whirlwind introduction to the arts: that's what children will find at Hands on the Arts, a free two-day festival in Sunnyvale, northwest of San Jose.

The event, held May 21 and 22, will offer children and their parents a chance to learn art techniques, see dances, and hear music from around the world--and sometimes join in themselves. Performances are also part of the program.

This third annual multicultural festival plans to include some 60 exhibits, performances, and workshops. Professional artists, dancers, and musicians will share their knowledge with the children, teaching dances, painting faces with bright stage make-up, and making masks, mosaics, paper, and pottery.

Starting at 10 A.M., workshops begin hourly; most last about 45 minutes (the festival ends at 5) and allow ages 5 and up. Enroll on festival day.

Both days, performers appear on a large outdoor stage. …
