Dear Readers,

"Hey, Tiger!" came the call to a friend on the golf course a few days after the real Tiger Woods won his third-straight major tournament. Maybe from a friend the moniker of a champion might be appropriate. But the call to my black friend from a total stranger who was white?

What brings this to mind are interviews with scores of people following the two major party conventions. Generally, folks were unfazed by what little they saw and most just ignored. People were focused more on how incredible a golfer Woods is or who won Survivor.

In other words, life at the end of summer seems as casual as it was at the start. For example, despite the continued beating that technology stocks are taking (along with other sectors), people still jibber-jabber about their stock portfolios. Apparently, it's a habit.

And therein is the problem facing George W. Bush and Al Gore: How to excite the masses who otherwise are apathetic about politics and easygoing about life as surely this summer as when cool air in the house was a block of ice in front of an oscillating fan. …
