A reader in Washington state asks if we can confirm an editorial comment from a month or so ago in the Wall Street Journal regarding Elian Gonzalez, the young Cuban boy whose mother died in the effort to get him to the shores of the United States. According to the commentary, after Elian was whisked back to Cuba following his nightmare stay in the United States, he was separated from his father and packed off to a state education center. "I have been unable to find any reference to this in the print media, nor have I heard anything from the talking heads" our correspondent notes.

Well, other than a collective sigh of relief at having successfully abetted the administration in getting rid of Elian before the fall elections, there hasn't really been any follow-up from those who have a warm and fuzzy relationship with the Cuban establishment. Of course, little Elian already was wearing his school uniform and undergoing reeducation when he left the United States, so undoubtedly that program continued once he was back under Fidel Castro's wing. Apparently, though, Castro's regime became sensitive to concerns that Elian would be separated from his father and brainwashed. …
