Former Planet Organic Chief Plans Rival Chain

A former Planet Organic chief is to launch a rival organic supermarket chain called Here, offering organic produce at affordable prices.

Troy Smith, who was drafted in from the US to help set up Planet Organic five years ago, is teaming up with Michelle Jensen, a former business development manager of the BBC's retail department, to launch Here.

The first outlet, covering 3000 sq ft, opens on London's Sydney Street, Chelsea, on September 29.A further eight stores will roll out across London, with a view to opening more across the UK at a later date.

Design agency Williams Murray Hamm created the concept. Zac Goldsmith, the wealthy green campaigner, provided financial backing.

Smith claims the venture will help customers avoid confusion about product quality by offering only 100% certified organic goods. Here will sell 4000 product lines, from fresh fruit and vegetables to wines and vitamins.

The organic chain will compete against Planet Organic, which launched in 1995 with a flagship store in Notting Hill, and Fresh & Wild, originally Freshlands. …
