When Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche came together 3 1/2 years ago, the worldwide attention they received was staggering. The two fragile yet radiant blonds were viewed as an oddity, something that hadn't quite happened before. Yes, there were other gay and lesbian couples, but this one quickly became fair game for unprecedented gawking. DeGeneres was at the height of the media madness that eclipsed her life when she outed both herself and her character on her sitcom Ellen. Heche was a talented rising star in the film world, reaching for her first major role, in Six Days Seven Nights. They were in love. They held hands and went to premieres. They snuggled in front of the president. They did interviews together and attended a multitude of gay and lesbian functions.

"We didn't mean to become the Real World of lesbian dating," DeGeneres told The Advocate in March. "We didn't mean to show all that." Ultimately, they had to retreat. They moved to Ojai, Calif.
