Dear Readers,

We have spent the better part of the summer (and will continue to do so through the November elections) on a special assignment interviewing people from all walks of life wherever we travel. In short, it's a virtual 24/7 project that often is fun (especially with a 5-year-old in tow, whom we sometimes have ask the questions). Occasionally it's a pain in the neck (think logistics when the family goes along), but it's always illuminating. Interestingly, people talk more freely when they meet a reporter on the job with his family. Americans ain't dumb.

What brings this to mind is the special cover story assigned to senior writer Stephen Goode and ace photographer Rick Kozak. As they did four years ago, the dynamic duo was tasked with traveling old Route 66 to get the pulse of America from a perspective often ignored by big news outlets. They had no agenda other than to spend two weeks meeting folks and talking politics in casual settings.

What they brought back is a priceless snapshot of "America's Road," sprinkled with authentic people living the American Dream, sometimes with difficulty but always with a keen sense of moral character. …
