A refreshing wilderness, Angel Island State Park offers a convenient escape in the midst of San Francisco's well-traveled waterways. Ferryloads of visitors flock to thc island on weekend mornings, but in the afternoon they have to return to the mainland all except the lucky few with reservations at one of the island's nine hike-in campsites.

Autumn's warm and fogless nights are particularly prized by island campers, and sites are hard to get on weekends. With mail-in reservations accepted up to eight weeks in advance, now is the time to stake your claim. For registration forms and more information, call Mistix at (800) 444-7275. There's a $6 per night camping fee and a $3.95 nonrefundablereservation fee.

From choice spots on the island, you'll get a unique perspective on the illuminated San Francisco skyline and the new lighting on the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. The two Ridge Area sites boast the best views. The three Sunrise sites can accommodate groups of up to 24. …
