O'Hara named 'Plain Dealer' M.E.

Cleveland daily hopes 'Post' man will deliver with a different style

When Doug Clifton, editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, wanted a new managing editor, he reached back to his Floridian news roots, choos- ing Tom O'Hara of The Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach, a Florida newspaper veteran who worked under Clifton at The Miami Herald more than a decade ago.

"He's a hell of a journalist," said Clifton, who joined The Plain Dealer, circulation 386,312, last year. "He's got great experience, and he's a great leader of people."

O'Hara, 53, replaces former Plain Dealer Managing Editor Gary Clark, who resigned after more than 22 years at the paper, including 10 as managing editor. Clifton said he wanted to reassign Clark, 54, to a more administrative post with an emphasis on budgetary duties, but Clark declined.

"I was restructuring at the top, and I had a new assignment for him, which he chose not to take," Clifton told E&P. "He was an excellent newspaperman, but I was looking for someone with a different style -- a fresher eye. …
