Galleria mall merchants applauded the London (Ont.) Public Library board's decision to include a second-floor entrance in its plan for the new main library, to be built in a former store at the mall. The added entrance will cost about $70,000 ($47,200 U.S.), the August 25 London Free Press said. Merchants said the library will help revive the mall, which has seen a number of retailers depart.


The Library of Congress and 16 other libraries in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are pilot-testing the Collaborative Digital Reference Service, an online reference service that will be available 24 hours a day to users worldwide, with an eye to having it up and running this fall. The British Council is scaling back its library and information services in Addis Ababa and making "the most modest of increases" in user fees because of funding constraints, according to the August 11 Addis Tribune. The council said it is moving away from its traditional role as a public library but will offer its target audiences a fully automated library and information system.


The Ministry of Culture and Beijing Digiark Information Corporation told the August 18 China Daily that the main technical problems that have stood in the way of China's digital library have been solved. Digiark President Tian Jie said his company had acquired input, storage, search, and publishing technologies; and former Vice Minister of Culture Xu Wenbo, who heads the project, said the government hoped to see the digital library established soon.


The Library Service is scaling down bookmobile service and cutting its book buying because its budget has been slashed from $253 million ($6.1 million U.S.) in the last financial year to $232 million this year, the Kingston Daily Gleaner reported July 28. …
