Dome 'Might Be Razed' If Talks with Legacy Fail

The future of the Millennium Dome is hanging on the outcome of negotiations with Legacy, which is nearing the end of exclusive talks with the government to take over the structure.

English Partnerships, the government agency overseeing talks on the future of the Dome, has admitted for the first time that the structure could be pulled down if negotiations with Robert Bourne-backed proposal Legacy fail to reach fruition.

Legacy proposes to turn the Dome site into a [pound]150m high-tech business community. Despite concerns about Legacy's financing, Bourne indicated this week that he was hopeful that a deal could be concluded with English Partnerships as early as next weekend.

Under the guidelines stipulated during the original bid competition, Legacy would retain the Dome structure as an integral part of its development. But English Partnerships now acknowledges that a new competition to take over the Dome could see a drastic relaxation in those guidelines, including a reduction in the length of time a preferred bidder would need to commit to running the Dome, and the future of the Greenwich structure itself. …
