Nor some years now, Marin peretz has been sending letters to various editors, the main point of which seems to be that The Nation is not The New Republic. Our personal favorite is the one he wrote to The New York Times some years ago, in which he objected to reports of a feud between the two magazines because The Nation's readership was "too tiny" to feud with, and besides, its content was "reflexively gauchiste," whatever that means. That was back in 1979, when the circulation of The New Republic was 76,074 and The Nation's was 32,110. Recently Peretz sent a letter to the editor of Gannett Westchester Newspapers, with the pretext of advising Democrats on what was an upcoming Congressional primary. He told them that our esteemed former publisher, Hamilton Fish 3d, did not meet the Peretz litmus test on the issue of Israel, and once again took the occasion to spread some epistolary misinformation about The Nation, this time in English but omitting any reference to comparative circulations, conceivably because in the interim The Nation's has climbed to more than 85,000. …
