The Hartford Schools in Wisconsin (www.hartfordjtl.k12.wi.us) were featured as "Web Site of the Month" in Technology & Learning's November, 1999, issue. Here are some key strategy suggestions from educator Stephanie Kleppin, Hartford's Web designer,

1. Visit other school sites to get a feel for what you like. Take notes about layout, color, navigation choices and types of links.

2. Look for local courses in Web design and network with other Web designers in your area.

3. Involve teachers in site planning and content. Good school sites have teacher Web pages where parents can learn about staff members and students can get assignments online.

4. Make sure your building and district administrators, local board of education, and staff development coordinators are aware of what you are trying to accomplish. They control the funds.

5. Get Adobe PhotoShop software for great graphics online. Keep up with what is happening with the latest HTML editors like Front Page 2000.

6. Purchase a good digital camera and take shots of as many school events as possible for online posting. …
