New Report Sets Aggressive Goals for Math and Science Education

The National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century asserts aggressive initiatives and recommendations in its report "Before It's Too Late." In this report, John Glenn establishes a clear action plan for bringing about positive change in science and mathematics education and for calling on key officials to make this change happen.

"Before It's Too Late" sets three goals of achievement: establish an ongoing system to improve the quality of math and science teaching; increase the pool of science and math teachers and quality of teacher preparation; and improve the working environment and make the teaching profession more attractive. It recommends action strategies to achieve these goals and calls on federal, state, and local governments as well as business, professional associations and other stakeholders to put the action into practice.

The Glenn Commission calls for states to conduct an immediate assessment of the curricula and text, classroom materials and professional development needs of science and math teachers and to develop a complete system of professional development that addresses short- and long-term needs of teachers. …
